Rhapsody in Knowledge My work over the decades has addressed and suggested ways to integrate and cultivate diversity, directly engaging with inter-community dialogue that crosses generations and cultures. The entirety of my artistic practice has consistently engaged in building community and removing barriers through visual engagement projects in the arts. I intend for my work to encourage social justice, access, resilience, and racial equality. My overarching interest is to create work that reflects a sense of community and what I call “visual music,” a syncopated rhapsody of colors, shapes, symbols and rhythms that stimulate the senses bringing people together. Allowing the community to participated as my co-collaborators through schools and civic organizations directly connects the neighborhood to this work. The curvilinear outline and agitated color patterns resemble the activity that happens at a library. The library stitches a community together in ways that its linear streets cannot. One must negotiate interactions of compassion, caution, give and take, as well as gestures of respect and common courtesy to arrive at this new circle of life, community. Symbolized by the patterns and colors of each fan element. Jamaica Plain was my home when I first arrived here in 1974. It welcomed me with its rich community of artists and an esprit de corps for life. A presence of camaraderie-ship I was familiar with from my youth and adult life in Chicago. My studio was in the old Bickford Factory building (Thomas Gustave Plant, Shoe Factory) at Centre and Bickford Streets, which burned to the ground in the winter of 1976. Many artists I met there, I still have fulfilling relationships with today. They have become part of my life journey. The circular motion and commotion that always happens at Hyde Square rotary stiches the community together in ways that its linear streets cannot. One must negotiate interaction(s) of compassion, caution, give and take and common curtesy to arrive at or continue their journey on the other side of the circle of life, the rotary. The opportunity to create a work in collaboration with the community of JP-Hyde Square is consistent with my approach to public Art. A work that comes to life from interactions between myself and members of the community is the richest experience one can ask to be part of. All my Public Art commissions have been fashioned in this manner. (see attachment and images) Art, is in fact an experience or exercise in the manipulation of elements for an effect of change and betterment of life through an aesthetic sensitivity. A differentiated design, materiality and philosophy relating to the substance of reasoning rather than the form it takes. Elevating ones intellectual, emotional or spiritual well-being are the experiences I seek to illuminate in works of art in the public domain. And of equal concern is my endeavor to impregnate my work with what I call “visual music” a syncopated rhapsody of colors, shapes, symbols and rhythms that stimulate the senses bringing people together, in community. I look forward to having an opportunity to develop a public art concept for the Hyde Square community.
